Pre-Paramedic (Community Health Services)


Would you like a career in the emergency services?  This one-year full-time course offers you the ideal grounding in the skills and knowledge needed to embark on a career in this field. You will get the chance to begin an exciting and challenging career which will see you working in a caring environment. You will learn about the skills needed in the healthcare sector, you will also gain a good foundation if you wish to progress further in your studies. This course is ideally suited to those who are calm and work well under pressure and who would like to work in the as a Paramedic.

Format Full-time. September 2024 to May 2025.
Location Onsite at Mallow Campus.
Timetable Hours between Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 15:30.
Requirements No CAO required (Leaving Cert./LCA/equivalent for under 23s). Application review discussion.
Starting Classes start the week of Monday the 16th of September 2024.

Entry Requirements

CAO points not required. All applicants will be required to attend an application review to discuss the course suitability for the learner and to establish that all applications meet the minimum requirements:

Leaving Certificate or equivalent. For mature applicants appropriate experience will be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.


QQI Level 5 Certificate in Community Health Services 5M4468.

Additional Certification in Patient Handling, Client Moving, First Aid Responder, Fire Warden Hazardous Substances and Breathing Apparatus.

Work Placement / Experience

Work experience is an integral part of this course. Participants will be required to undertake a 60 hour duration work placement. The dates will be specified by the college in September.

Students from this course will gain a strong foundation in the paramedic sector who can then progress to several very specific training awards such as Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with the National Ambulance Service and Ambulance course can lead to careers in the public service for fire and ambulance personnel as well as employment opportunities with private ambulance and event support.
