INTRODUCTION:

Are you considering a career in Animal Science?

Animal production forms a significant part of agriculture in Ireland and contributes significantly to the country’s economy. Animal science covers most animals and animal products. This includes all aspects of agriculture (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry and horses) and their products (meat, milk and dairy products, wool, mohair, eggs, hides and skins), as well as aquatic life. pertaining to (fish, etc.) and wildlife.

Animal science mainly includes three disciplines, namely reproduction, physiology and nutrition, but there are also many aspects of animal science such as animal science. Meat, dairy products, wool, etc.

This programme is designed to equip learners with skills to operate effectively and efficiently as an individual, member of a team or in a supervisory role to respond as appropriate to an unpredictable or unexpected situation as arising in an animal industry context , working for the well-being of an animal.

It will also enable the learner to acquire knowledge, skills and competence to provide for the needs of animals in a range of animal care contexts and to progress to further and or higher education and training.

The learner who successfully completes this programme will achieve the Level 6 Advanced Certificate Animal Care (6M5153). The learner may then be eligible to apply to progress to the next or higher levels of the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) with a higher education provider.

Mallow Campus Animal Science (Level 6)

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • CAO points not required.
  • Hold a level 5 full award or equivalent
  • All applicants will be required to attend an application review discussion. An offer of a place on this course is contingent on the applicant meeting the minimum entry requirements set out here, and satisfactory presentation at interview.
  • Leaving Certificate or equivalent. For mature applicants appropriate experience will be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.

DURATION:

One year. Full-time. Class timetables to follow in September, and subject to change.

Erasmus+:

50 full-time day students will travel, fully-funded, with Erasmus+ to another European country for 2 weeks. Find out more and apply.

CERTIFICATION:

  • QQI Certificate in Animal Science, Level 6 (6M5153).
  • QQI Minor Award in Mathematics, Level 5 (5N1833) – Optional, offered for learners who may not meet progression requirements to higher education.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

Work experience in a veterinary practice is an integral part of this course. The dates and duration will be specified by the College in September.

EDUCATION PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES:

Advance on a competitive basis to degrees in Veterinary Nursing in Dundalk, Athlone, Dublin and Letterkenny. Graduates can also progress to Wildlife Biology and Veterinary Biosciences at IT Tralee and Science degrees in Institutes of Technology across Ireland. Click HERE for further information.
